LISLE, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team was defeated by the Benedictine University Eagles
14-7 on Sunday in the second game of a Northern Athletics
Conference doubleheader at The Sports Complex.
Benedictine grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a
Rick Porcaro two-run home run. The Eagles added to their lead in
the second when they scored nine runs on six hits, chasing
sophomore starting pitcher Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport,
Wis./Campbellsport) after 1.2 innings of work on the mound.
Sophomore Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) put
Wisconsin Lutheran on the scoreboard in the fourth when he belted a
solo home run. After the Eagles plated their 12th run of the game
in the bottom half of the frame, the Warriors followed with four
runs in the fifth on a pair of two-RBI doubles from sophomore
Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and senior AJ
Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian).
Benedictine scored its final two runs in the seventh before WLC
answered with two runs of its own in the eighth. Senior Jared
Huntemann (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and junior Kyle Edlhuber
(Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) each recorded an RBI in the
inning.
Huntemann and Barkhurst each went 3-for-5 to lead the Warriors,
who finished with 12 hits in the contest.
Rick Porcaro and Nick Meitzler each went 3-for-5 at the plate
for BU (15-17, 9-7 NAC), combining for seven RBIs and five runs
scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-22, 5-11 NAC) is scheduled to host
Rockford College on Monday in a NAC doubleheader beginning at 1
p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
