MILWAUKEE - The Warriors jumped out to a
third-inning lead that they would never give up as they topped
Lawrence, 6-1, to sweep a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at
Neumann Family Field.
After two scoreless innings, Wisconsin Lutheran was able to take
advantage of two Lawrence errors to score three runs. Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan), Shawn Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley
Lutheran) and Cody Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City) all
scored on the errors. Junior Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) brought Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) across the plate with an RBI sacrifice
fly.
Neither team was able to bring home a run over the next two
innings, combining for only one hit between them. The Vikings were
able to plate a run in the top of the sixth inning to bring the
score to 4-1.
Just for insurance, the Warriors scored a pair of runs in the
bottom of the sixth inning. Pollesch and Schmidt both had RBIs in
the inning for Wisconsin Lutheran.
With the score at 6-1 in the top of the final inning, Lawrence
went three-up, three-down to end the game. Austin Backhaus
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) earned the complete-game win
for the Warriors. Through the seven innings, Backhaus allowed just
one run and struck out three Vikings (12-14).
The Warriors (10-24) will face Carroll University in a
doubleheader on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled at 4
p.m.
