WAUKESHA, Wis. - Sophomore Ethan Geis (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and
three runs scored to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College to a
convincing 19-7 win over Carroll University in the first game of a
non-conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Waukesha West
High School.
Wisconsin Lutheran wasted no time getting on the scoreboard,
plating four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. The
host Pioneers came right back in the bottom of the frame to score
three runs on three hits. Carroll had a chance to strike for more
runs, but left the bases loaded when the inning ended.
The Warriors kept adding to their run total in the second by
scoring five runs on four hits. Junior Ryan Pollesch (Markesan,
Wis./Markesan) keyed the inning with a two-run single. All five
runs in the inning were unearned as the Pioneers committed a pair
of errors.
Geis extended WLC's lead to 13-3 in the third inning when he
belted a one-out grand slam home run. The Warriors were held
scoreless in the fourth and fifth, their only two scoreless innings
of the game. WLC added three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by
an Eric Burrow (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) two-RBI single.
The Pioneers plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth to
make the score 16-6 in favor of the Warriors.
WLC scored its last three runs in the seventh on three straight
RBIs by Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian), AJ Paczocha
(Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove Christian) and Geis. Carroll added an
unearned run in the last of the seventh for the final 19-7
margin.
Senior Jared Huntemann (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago), junior Kyle
Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Ferrell each
finished with three hits in the game. Ferrell also added three
RBIs. Junior Ben Hermanson (Antioch, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran)
allowed six runs on six hits in 5.2 innings to earn his first
victory of the season.
Carroll had seven players each tally one hit in the game. Tyler
Warner led the Pioneers (8-18) with two RBIs. Ryne Plager was
charged with the loss after he allowed nine runs, four earned, on
nine hits in two innings.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-24) squares off against Carroll at 6:30
p.m. on Wednesday in its final non-conference game of the season at
Waukesha West High School.
