WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team broke a 7-7 tie by scoring two runs in the ninth
inning to defeat the Carroll University Pioneers 9-7 on Wednesday
in game two of a non-conference doubleheader at Waukesha West High
School.
Sophomore Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) gave
Wisconsin Lutheran an early 3-0 lead when he belted a three-run
home run in the top of the first that plated sophomore Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and junior Kyle Edlhuber
(Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory).
Carroll answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to
take a two-run lead. Matt Holman's three-run home run keyed the
Pioneers surge. After a scoreless second, the Pioneers plated a
pair of runs in the third on a solo home run and a wild pitch for a
7-3 advantage.
The Warriors cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth when they
scored three runs on RBIs by AJ Paczocha (Cudahy, Wis./Union Grove
Christian), Edlhuber and Eric Burrow (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran).
WLC tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth when junior Shawn Glasel
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran), who led off the inning with a
single, scored on an error. The Warriors were on the verge of
defeat in the seventh when Carroll led off the inning with a
triple. Sophomore right fielder Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East
Troy) hauled in the first out on a fly ball and then followed by
gunning down the runner at the plate who was attempting to score
the game-winning run, sending the game into extra frames.
Burrow broke the tie in the ninth when he smacked a two-run
double that scored Ferrell and Barkhurst. WLC held the Pioneers in
the bottom of the inning to secure its fourth-straight victory.
Edlhuber finished 3-for-4 in the plate to lead the Warriors,
whose 12 wins are the most since 2002 when they finished with 19.
Four other players added two hits in the contest. Ferrell and
Burrow each added three RBIs. Junior Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake
Beach, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) tossed six scoreless innings in
relief to pick up the win on the mound.
Andy Sturtevant went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored to
lead Carroll (8-19).
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-24, 5-13 NAC) hosts Concordia University
Chicago on Saturday in its final home doubleheader of the season.
