MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped
its first game of a Northern Athletics Conference baseball
doubleheader to Concordia Chicago 8-3 on Saturday afternoon at
Neumann Family Field.
The Warriors got off to a quick start by striking for two runs
in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Barkhurst (Crete,
Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple
Christian) each had RBI singles for Wisconsin Lutheran in the
frame.
After being shutout for the first two frames. the Cougars
responded with four runs in the top of the third inning to go in
front 4-2. CUC added two more runs onto its lead in the fifth and
one more in the sixth to bring the score to 7-2.
With WLC's offense still struggling, the Cougars added one final
run to their lead in the eighth inning to go up 8-2. The Warriors'
offense managed only four hits after scoring the pair of
first-inning runs. In the bottom of the ninth, trailing 8-2, the
offense saw a spark. Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) had an RBI single that scored Barkhurst to trim the
deficit to five runs.
Barkhurst, Ferrell and Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) each finished with two hits for the Warriors. Cody
Schmidt (Union City, Okla./Union City) tossed eight innings on the
mound, allowing six earned runs and striking out five to take the
loss.
Kyle Slechta went 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored to
lead Concordia Chicago (26-13, 15-4 NAC). A.J. Anderson pitched all
nine innings, giving up just three runs while fanning 10.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-25, 5-14 NAC) will face off with the
Cougars in the second half of the NAC doubleheader today at Neumann
Family Field at 4 p.m.
