Johnson claims ninth place in triple jump

MARIETTA, Ohio - Wisconsin Lutheran College junior men's track & field student-athlete Dominique Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent) finished ninth out of 17 competitors in the triple jump on Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Don Drumm Stadium on the campus of Marietta College.

Johnson, who had the eighth best mark in the triple jump in NCAA Division III heading into Saturday, provisionally qualified for the event on May 9 when he leaped a school-record 14.76 meters (48' 5.25") at the Wisconsin Twilight.

Johnson claimed the ninth and final spot in the final round of competition when he jumped 14.59 meters (47' 10") in the preliminary round. He finished with a jump of 14.64 meters (48') in the final round, coming four inches shy of earning All-American status. Carl Luxhoj of Coast Guard Academy claimed eighth place with a leap of 14.75 meters (48' 4"). Sophomore Chrys Jones of Centre College was named national champion in the event after leaping 15.32 meters (50' 3").

Johnson, who also competed at the indoor championships in March, is the first student-athlete in WLC track & field history to participate in a national championship.
