SUPERIOR, Wis. - Running backs Jesse Muldrow
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Larry Hairl (Chicago,
Ill./Clemente) combined to rush for a school-record 319 yards on
Saturday as the Wisconsin Lutheran College football team defeated
the College of St. Scholastica 27-13 in a non-conference game at
Ole Haugsrud Field.
Muldrow, a sophomore, rushed for 171 yards on 24 carries and one
touchdown, while Hairl, a junior, gained 138 yards on 19 attempts
and three touchdowns en route to the record-setting mark. Hairl and
Muldrow averaged 7.3 and 7.1 yards on the ground, respectively.
The Warriors scored on their first possession of the game when
Hairl scampered 19 yards to pay dirt to give WLC a 7-0 lead with
11:26 left to play in the first quarter. The score stayed that way
until 12 seconds left in the second quarter when Muldrow carried
the ball into the end zone from two yards out to give the visitors
a 14-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Saints trimmed the deficit in half when quarterback Alex
Thiry connected with Keegan O'Neill for a 30-yard touchdown with
7:09 left in the third quarter. Wisconsin Lutheran answered their
score with 1:20 left in the quarter when Hairl run it in from 11
yards out for a 21-7 advantage.
A St. Scholastica touchdown with 9:38 remaining the game cut the
score to 21-13. WLC put the game out of reach with 2:02 left on the
clock when Hairl found the end zone from six yards away for his
third TD of the day.
Junior quarterback John Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) completed
nine of 15 passing attempts for 96 yards. Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian) caught two passes for 36 yards to lead WLC's
receivers.
The Warriors defense, which was led by Josh McCormick's (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) 10 tackles, forced fumble and fumble
recovery, held the Saints to just six yards rushing on 22 carries
in the game. WLC allowed just 210 yards of total offense.
Thiry was 14-for-21 for 109 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses
to lead the Saints (1-2). Sean Graskey recorded a game-high 13
tackles in the loss.
The Warriors (1-2) will have off next Saturday for their bye
week before returning home to Milwaukee October 3 for their annual
Homecoming game and conference opener against Concordia University
Chicago. Kickoff between Wisconsin Lutheran and Concordia Chicago
is slated for 1 p.m. at Raabe Stadium.
