MILWAUKEE - After shooting a solid 51.6 percent
in the first half, the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball
team could not keep its rhythm, scoring just 21 points in the
second half to drop a Northern Athletics Conference game to
cross-town rival Milwaukee School of Engineering 73-62 at the
Recreation Complex on Tuesday night.
A three-pointer by senior Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota
Valley Lutheran) at the 13:44 mark in the first half put the
Warriors up 15-7, their largest lead of the game. The Raiders
responded by going on a 12-2 run and held the lead for the
remainder of the half. A late push by WLC brought it within one at
halftime, 42-41.
Ziesemer led Wisconsin Lutheran, which shot 51.6 percent from
the field, by scoring all eight of his points in the opening half.
MSOE countered by shooting 58.1 percent as Jeremy Off paced the
Raiders with 15 points in the first.
Senior Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
tied the game at 44 apiece just 1:50 into the second half of action
as he made the Warriors' only three-pointer of the half. The
Raiders went on a 19-7 run and the cold-shooting Warriors would
climb no closer than seven points for the rest of the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot just 28.0 percent (7-for-25) from the
field in the second half, while MSOE shot 35.7 percent (10-for-28).
Siemers led all second-half scorers with 13 points.
Siemers finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Alex Merbach
(Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) each scored nine points. The
Warriors shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor for the game
and were 92.3 percent (12-for-13) from the free-throw line.
Off led four players from MSOE (9-6, 4-3 NAC) in double figures
with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Austin Meier followed with 17
points. The Raiders held off Wisconsin Lutheran with a 47.5
shooting percentage (28-for-59) and a perfect night from the
charity stripe (12-of-12).
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-9, 3-3 NAC) will make its first trip south
of the border on Thursday, traveling to River Forest, Ill., to face
the Concordia University Chicago Cougars at 7 p.m.
