RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) broke a 69-69 tie by sinking two free throws with 7.4 seconds left to send the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team to a 71-69 victory over the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Thursday night at the Geiseman Gymnasium.

Wisconsin Lutheran, which trailed 2-0 less than 20 seconds into action, scored the next five points to grab one of its three leads in the entire contest. The Cougars, however, responded with an 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead at the 16:24 mark. CUC extended its lead to a game-high nine points, 22-13, with 8:37 left before halftime. WLC answered with a 15-2 run from that point on to capture a 28-24 halftime lead.

The Warriors closed out the first half shooting 40.0 percent, while Concordia Chicago shot 32.0 percent.

WLC, which never trailed in the second half, used a 20-9 run to lead by a game-high 15 points with 9:06 left in the game. Wisconsin Lutheran still maintained a 14-point lead (60-46) at the 6:16 mark before the Cougars began to slowly chip away at their deficit. A 10-0 run by the hosts trimmed the Warriors' lead to just four points with 4:19 on the clock. WLC had a 67-60 advantage with just 53 seconds remaining, but a couple of missed free throws and a turnover allowed the Cougars to tie the score at 69-69 with just eight seconds left.

Burmeister, who was fouled shortly after, knocked down both of his free throw attempts and WLC held off the Cougars on their final possession to cap off the victory. The Warriors shot 36.7 percent in the second half, compared to 45.7 percent for CUC.

Senior Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) made five three-pointers to pace the Warriors with 19 points, while classmate Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored 15. Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Five of Burmeister's nine points came at the charity stripe.

The Warriors finished the contest shooting 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the floor and were aided by 11 three-point field goals. WLC was an uncharacteristic 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the free-throw line, while committing 22 turnovers.

Deontay Young scored a game-high 20 points to lead three players in double figures for Concordia Chicago (9-7, 6-3 NAC), which shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the field. James Morgan added a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Wisconsin Lutheran (5-9, 4-3 NAC) travels to Watertown, Wis., on Saturday for a NAC matchup against the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
