WATERTOWN, Wis. - The WLC men's basketball team
won its second straight road game on Saturday night by defeating
the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders 76-69 in front of a
raucous crowd at the Maranatha Gymnasium.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which never had a lead during the first half
of action, shot just 31.0 percent from the field in the opening
half. Maranatha Baptist countered by shooting 53.8 percent in the
half and had a game-high six-point lead at two different junctures
in the first half. However, WLC closed out the half on a 12-6 run
to trail by just one point, 35-34, at halftime.
Despite its cold first-half shooting, WLC finished the first
half with nine steals. The Warriors were 3-for-12 from beyond the
arc and 13-for-20 from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Crusaders
went 14-for-26 from the floor. Eight of MBBC's 11 missed shots in
the first half were from downtown.
The Warriors and Crusaders each traded leads once in the opening
minutes of the second half of play. WLC took the lead for good at
the 15:50 mark when senior Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) drained a three-pointer to put WLC in front 45-42.
Wisconsin Lutheran managed to build its lead up to a game-high 10
points, 67-57, with 6:45 remaining in the game. Maranatha got
within four points with 1:28 left but WLC was able to hold off the
host Crusaders for its second straight conference road win.
WLC committed only four turnovers in the second half and shot
45.8 percent from the floor, including 5-for-10 from three-point
range.
Seniors Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
and Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) scored
14 points apiece to lead the Warriors. Madson was the third Warrior
to finish in double figures with 11 points.
The Warriors posted a 37.7 percent (20-for-53) shooting
performance for the game. WLC attempted 43 free throws in the
contest, compared to just 14 for MBBC, but made just 28 of its
attempts at the charity stripe. The visitors turned the ball over
14 times, compared to 26 for the Crusaders.
Maranatha Baptist (4-10, 1-9 NAC) was led by Brendan Brown's 14
points. Joel Borchardt added 12 points. The Crusaders finished
shooting 51.0 percent (25-for-49) from the floor for the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-9, 5-3 NAC) caps off its three-game road
swing on Wednesday when it travels to Aurora, Ill., to take on the
Spartans at 7 p.m. WLC defeated AU 100-93 in its first meeting of
the season on December 1 at the Recreation Complex.
