MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team was handed its first Northern Athletics
Conference loss of the season on Saturday, falling to the Edgewood
College Eagles 71-63 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The Warriors, who shot only 23 percent in the first half, fell
behind 8-2 with just under three minutes gone by but managed to
come back and tie the score at 10 apiece. With WLC unable to grab a
first-half lead. Edgewood capped an end to the half with a 7-0 run
to lead by a game-high 11 points (37-26) at intermission.
WLC scored the first seven points of the second half to trim its
deficit to 37-32 early on. The Eagles were able to regain their
11-point lead at the 14:30 mark before the Warriors began to chip
away. Trailing by eight points (52-44) with 10:54 left, Wisconsin
Lutheran went on an 11-0 run to grab a 55-52 lead with 7:37 left to
play. Edgewood responded quickly by scoring the next six points
before WLC came back again to tie the game at 60-60 with 4:52
remaining. However, EC proceeded with a 9-0 scoring run to get a
hold of the lead for good.
Seniors Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Ben
Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) scored 14 and
13 points, respectively, to lead the Warriors. Sophomore Alex
Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) followed with his
second straight 11-rebound performance.
The Warriors concluded the contest by shooting 33.9 percent
(21-for-62) from the floor, compared to 44.4 percent (24-for-54)
shooting for the Eagles. WLC was 16-for-22 (73 percent) from the
charity stripe, its second lowest output of the season.
Ben Wisniewski scored a game-high 23 points to lead two players
in double figures for the Eagles (7-6, 4-1 NAC). Jeff Barczak
finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-7, 3-1 NAC) hosts Benedictine University
in its only game of the week on Wednesday, January 13. Tip-off
between the Warriors and Eagles is set for 7 p.m. at the Recreation
Complex.
