RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's soccer team had to play a pair of extra periods
Wednesday afternoon, before settling for a 2-2 double-overtime draw
with the Concordia University Chicago Cougars at Concordia
Stadium.
The Warriors reached the scoring column first in the 13th minute
when sophomore Kristen Lavallee (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) saw her
direct kick sail past CUC keeper Sarah Ann Evers. Wisconsin
Lutheran's one-goal lead stood until three seconds left before
halftime when the Cougars' Maggie Kucek scored on a header off of
Lyndsay Dyal's corner kick. The game was knotted 1-1 at
intermission after CUC outshot WLC 14-6 in the first half.
The second half began with 24 minutes of scoreless action before
Dyal connected on a penalty kick at the 67th minute to give CUC a
2-1 advantage. Its lead did not last long, however, as the Warriors
evened the game up 50 seconds later off of an own goal. A cross
from freshman Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) deflected off
the Cougars defense into their own net. The score remained tied 2-2
through the end of regulation.
Neither team could break the tied match over a pair of 10-minute
overtime frames and the contest ended in a 2-2 draw. The teams
combined for five shots during the two extra sessions.
Lavallee finished with four of WLC's 12 shot attempts for the
game. Senior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) played the
entire 110 minutes in the net for the Warriors, totaling nine saves
while facing 24 shots.
Alyssa Soulis tallied a game-high eight of CUC's 24 shots for
the game. Evers made eight stops in the net for the host Cougars
(0-10-1, 0-6-1 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-11-1, 1-7-1 NAC) returns to the pitch
Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Edgewood
College Eagles (10-4-1, 5-3 NAC) at Warrior Field.
