MEQUON, Wis. - Trailing 12-0 in the second
quarter, the Warriors scored 13 unanswered points to earn their
first victory over Concordia University Wisconsin in nine tries
after grinding out a 13-12 victory in the 2010 Lutheran Bowl
Saturday afternoon at Century Stadium.
It has been difficult for teams to put points on the scoreboard
against the WLC defense, which has been responsible for
surrendering just 13 points in the last three games. Dan Winsey
made two field goals for the Falcons, one from 42 yards, to spot
them a 6-0 lead with 4:46 remaining in the first half. One minute
later, John Palese intercepted a Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren
Township) pass and took it 48 yards for a touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff, freshman Donavin Tucker (Brookfield,
Wis./East) put the Warriors in great field position with a 49-yard
kickoff return. Senior Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) took
over from there with a 25 yard dash and a two-yard touchdown run to
bring Wisconsin Lutheran within five points, 12-7, at
halftime.
On the first drive of the second half for Concordia Wisconsin, a
Patrick Czerwiek pass was intercepted by sophomore Jason Kramer
(Oconomowoc, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran). Shaw and the offense
converted on two fourth-down situations and he later finished off
the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak. The two point
conversion was unsuccessful, but the Warriors took the lead for
good, 13-12.
WLC had a crucial possession with 6:20 left in the game starting
at its own 15-yard line. On third down, Shaw connected with
sophomore Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) for a 27 yard pass.
Another first down took time off of the clock, but the Warriors
were forced to punt with 3:20 remaining. Czerwiek completed passes
of 18, 34, and 7 yards to put the Falcons on the Warriors 26 yard
line. Winsey attempted a potential game-winning 43 yard field goal,
but it fell short and the Warriors ran out the clock for the
victory.
Shaw completed 7-of-20 passes for 65 yards and a rushing TD.
Hairl rushed for 52 yards with a touchdown. Junior Jesse Muldrow
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) rushed for 70 yards on 13
attempts. Stodola caught three passes for 41 yards.
Kramer led the defense with six tackles, an interception and
three pass break-ups. Senior Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) tallied five tackles and an interception.
Junior Tom Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) had four tackles and had a
game-high four pass break-ups.
Czerwiek was 15-of-41 for 205 yards and two interceptions. Leon
Davis led the receiving corps with seven catches for 89 yards.
Kasiem Duran and Matt Lechler recorded 12 and 10 tackles,
respectfully. Palese returned an interception 48 yards for a
touchdown and also had two pass break-ups.
The Warriors (6-2, 4-1 NAC), who won their school-record sixth
game, will play their final road game next Saturday at Aurora
University (6-2, 4-1 NAC). The game will begin at 12 p.m. at Vago
Field in Aurora, Ill.
