MILWAUKEE - Despite out-shooting Alverno
College 22-7, the visiting Inferno escaped Warrior Field with a 2-1
overtime win over Wisconsin Lutheran College Tuesday night in a
Northern Athletics Conference women's soccer contest.
Alverno's Nava Moniriarani netted her second goal of the match
with 16 seconds left in overtime to break a 1-1 tie that lasted
throughout the majority of the second half. After finishing the
first half with six shots apiece, the Warriors dominated the
remainder of the game, out-shooting the Inferno 16-1 over the final
54-plus minutes.
Moniriarani scored her first goal in the 14th minute to give
Alverno an early 1-0 lead. AC kept its slim advantage until
halftime. Freshman Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) opened the
scoring in the second half for the Warriors at 46:06 from an assist
by Allison Mielke (Green Bay, Wis./N.E.W. Lutheran) to tie the game
1-1. The score stood through the rest of the half as WLC was denied
its many scoring opportunities.
Senior Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) made five
saves throughout the game for the Warriors. Smith paced the attack
with eight shots, four on goal. Three other players added three
shots each.
Samantha Robinson made nine saves for the Inferno (4-6, 1-4
NAC), while Moniriarani attempted six of Alverno's seven shots, all
of which were on goal.
The Warriors (4-10, 1-6 NAC) wrap up their four-game homestand
Saturday afternoon by hosting Lakeland College (3-10, 2-4 NAC) at 1
p.m. in a NAC doubleheader with the men's team at Warrior
Field.
