MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team nearly overcame a four-goal halftime deficit, but
its comeback effort came just short as it fell to the Lakeland
College Muskies 5-4 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics
Conference match at Warrior Field.
The Warriors put themselves ahead early when junior Trevor
Schwartz (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) buried a rebound
into the back of the net 9:44 into the game. Their lead did not
last long, though, as Lakeland tied the game three minutes later.
Things seemed to fall apart for the Warriors after that, as the
Muskies scored all five of their goals within a 16-minute stretch
during the first half. The goal scorers for the Muskies were Ben
Koepsell (twice), Josh Lapka, Adam Benson and Jeremy Hardy.
Schwartz cut the Lakeland lead down to three scores with his
second goal of the game at the 32:11 mark. Senior Cameron Teske
(Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) came within inches of making it a
two-goal game when he struck the crossbar late in the half. Both
teams had nine shots in the opening period.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out in the second half determined to get
itself back into the match. WLC scored two quick goals within the
first seven minutes of the half. Teske scored on a header from a
nice cross by junior Nate Waggoner (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran).
Minutes later, Schwartz completed the hat trick with another goal
to make it a 5-4 game.
Lakeland bent, but did not break. Despite out-shooting the
Muskies 15-4 in the second half, WLC fell one goal short of
completing the comeback.
Schwartz led the Warriors with three goals and five shots. Teske
scored a goal and had two assists. Waggoner and freshman Stefan
Filipovic (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) also added assists. Sophomore
goaltender Tony Bink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) made
three saves and faced 13 shots.
Koepsell scored twice for Lakeland (2-7-4, 2-1-4 NAC) and Alex
Piekarski made 10 saves in goal.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-11-1, 2-4 NAC) continues its three-game
homestand Tuesday when it hosts fourth-ranked Dominican University
(11-0-1, 6-0-1 NAC) at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field.
