MILWAUKEE - A career-high 20 points from
sophomore DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) wasn't enough for the
Warriors as the Lawrence University Vikings used a big run early in
the second half to pull away for a 73-62 victory over Wisconsin
Lutheran College Monday night at the Recreation Complex.
Cupertino scored two of the Warriors' first three baskets to
take an early 6-3 advantage, but the hosts surrendered 10 straight
points to Lawrence, which then held the lead for good. Wisconsin
Lutheran cut the deficit to three points three different times in
the opening half, but would go to the locker room trailing
34-27.
Lawrence shot 51.7 percent from the field and went 4-for-11 from
long range in the first half, compared to 44.4 percent shooting
from the Warriors. Lawrence's Jon Mays led all first-half scorers
with 16 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out fast in the second half, scoring
three quick layups to cut the Vikings lead to one, 34-33, just two
minutes into the half. Lawrence responded to WLC's quick start with
its second 10-0 run of the game from which the Warriors could never
recover. A three-pointer from Brian Gryszkiewicz gave the Vikings a
game-high 19-point lead with 8:17 remaining.
Lawrence shot 56 percent in the second half and 53.7 percent for
the game. The Vikings were also 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from beyond
the arc. Wisconsin Lutheran went 41.9 percent from the floor in the
second half, good for a game total of 43.1 percent.
Cupertino led the Warriors with a career-high 20 points. The
sophomore was 3-for-4 from three-point range and also led the team
with seven rebounds. Freshman Russell Strutz (Sturtevant,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) contributed eight points and six
rebounds.
Lawrence (3-2) had four players reach double figures. Erik
Borrenson pulled down a double-double with 10 points and 11
rebounds. Mays led the Vikings with 19 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-6, 0-1 NAC) remains on its home hardwood
Thursday when it hosts Maranatha Baptist Bible College (2-4, 0-1
NAC) at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
