MILWAUKEE - Concordia University Chicago used a
55.4 percent shooting performance to hand Wisconsin Lutheran
College its fourth straight defeat, 95-88, in the Warriors' final
regular-season home game Thursday at the Recreation Complex.
Both teams started out hot from the field in the early moments
of the first half, draining a combined five three-pointers in the
first 2:31 of the game. A trey by Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm,
Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran), the first of his career-high six
on the night, gave the Warriors an 11-10 lead. Their lead didn't
last long though as the Cougars went on a 13-2 run to take 23-13
lead.
WLC was able to trim its deficit right back down to three
points, 23-20, but once again CUC answered with another 10-0 run to
grab its largest lead of the game at the 10:36 mark of the opening
half. The Warriors cut down their deficit to seven points, 52-45,
at halftime.
Senior Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) poured in
12 points for the Warriors, who shot 45.7 percent. Jeff Weberg
scored 18 first-half points for Concordia Chicago, which shot a
stifling 58.8 percent from the floor in the period.
CUC took its largest lead of the second half, 61-49, with 16:34
left to play. WLC responded with an 8-0 spurt to get within four
points and kept its deficit under 10 points for the majority of the
half. The Warriors trailed by just four points, 90-86, with 1:05
remaining after another Ziesemer three-pointer, but the Cougars
made five of six free throws in the final 17 seconds to hold off
the hosts.
Madson and Ziesemer paced five in double figures from Wisconsin
Lutheran with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Jeremy Burmeister
(Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) finished with 11, while Alex
Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and Kaleb Buch
(Manitowoc, Wis./Lutheran) each added 10 points. Merbach and
Darnell Williams (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) grabbed a
team-high six rebounds each.
The Warriors drained a season-high 14 three-pointers and
finished the contest by shooting 42.2 percent (27-for-64) from the
floor overall. CUC won the battle of the boards over WLC,
41-32.
Weberg finished a game-high 29 points to guide the Cougars
(13-11, 10-6 NAC), who shot 55.4 percent (36-for-65) for the game.
James Morgan recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11
rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-14, 7-8 NAC) will travel to Dominican
University in River Forest, Ill., on Thursday at 7 p.m. with the
final NAC Tournament spot on the line. A WLC win would secure them
the fourth seed in the NAC South Division and the last remaining
slot in the conference tournament. If the Stars win, they would
receive the last tournament spot. WLC defeated DU 82-68 in their
first meeting of the season on February 2 at the Recreation
Complex.
