MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team finished its 2009-10 season by shooting its
way to a 92-81 victory over Maranatha Bible Baptist College in a
NAC North/South Challenge game Saturday afternoon at the Recreation
Complex.
The Warriors started all five of their seniors who were playing
their final game for the forest green and white. Wisconsin Lutheran
raced out of the gates quickly by draining their first seven
three-point attempts. WLC led by 15 points (37-22) with 8:08
remaining in the first half before a late Maranatha 9-2 run cut its
deficit to seven points (46-39) as the first half expired.
Senior Ben Ziesemer (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
was 5-for-5 from beyond the arc as he led the Warriors with 19
points in the first half. As a team, the Warriors went 64.3 percent
(9-for-14) from three point range and had an overall shooting
percentage of 55.6 percent (15-for-27). The Crusaders stayed close
by shooting 64 percent (16-for-25) and were paced by Josh Stein's
first-half total of 10 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran continued to shoot the ball well in its last
half of the season and built its lead to a game-high 17 points when
Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) hit a
three-pointer with 4:30 remaining in the game. Maranatha climbed
within seven with 1:44 left, but would get no closer.
The Warriors shot 61.5 percent in the second half compared to
51.9 percent for the visitors. For the game, Wisconsin Lutheran and
Maranatha shot 58.5 percent and 57.7 percent from the field,
respectively, The Warriors set season highs by shooting 59.1
percent from three-point range, while also by dishing out 24
assists.
Siemers ended his college basketball career by scoring 27
points, 23 of which came in the second half alone. Ziesemer also
finished with 24 points. Siemers and Ziesemer went a combined 90
percent (9-for-10) on three-point attempts, Fellow senior Shawn
Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 11 points and
Jeremy Burmeister (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) had a
season-high nine assists.
Maranatha (8-16, 3-13 NAC) had five players in double figures,
led by Brendan Brown's 17 points. Josh Stein grabbed a game-high
six rebounds and added 14 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran finishes its 2009-10 season with a 9-15
overall record and a 7-9 mark in the NAC.
