VERO BEACH, Fla. - Wisconsin Lutheran College
rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game, but the Coe
College Kohawks scored three late runs to edge the Warriors 6-4 in
the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday at the RussMatt
Dodgertown Invitational.
The Kohawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after plating a pair
of runs on two hits and an error in the first inning. The Warriors
cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when junior
Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) singled home Ryan
Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan).
After Coe added another run in the second, Wisconsin Lutheran
tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth on RBIs from junior Matt Lang
(East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and senior Shawn Glasel (Appleton,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran).
Following a scoreless fifth frame, Coe used four hits to score
three runs and went back in front of WLC, 6-4, in the sixth. The
Warriors rallied in the seventh, scoring a run on two hits,
including another Barkhurst RBI, but their comeback fell just
short.
Barkhurst went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored to lead
the Warriors at the plate, while Glasel was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
WLC pounded out 10 hits and was solid defensively, committing one
error in the game.
Junior Austin Backhaus (Campellsport, Wis./Campbellsport)
received a no-decision after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just
one earned run on eight hits. Pollesch was dealt the loss (0-1)
after giving up three runs on four hits. Facing 35 batters in the
game, three WLC pitchers combined to walk just one Kohawk
hitter.
Pat Richmond led the Kohawks (6-4) by going 3-for-4 with two
RBIs and two runs scored. Alec Lewis pitched a complete game,
surrenduring 10 hits and four earned runs. He struck out four and
didn't walk a batter.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-6) is scheduled to battle Gettysburg
College on Friday in a doubleheader slated to start at 9 a.m.
