BELOIT, Wis. - Wisconsin Lutheran had to settle
for a split with the Beloit Buccaneers as it dropped the second
game of its non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon by a
score of 11-1 at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
Base running miscues halted early rallies for Wisconsin Lutheran
and Beloit took advantage by scoring three runs on five hits
through the first two innings of action.
After freshman starting pitcher Sam Braaten (Appleton,
Wis./East) held the Buccaneers scoreless in the third inning,
Beloit answered with four runs on just two hits in the fourth, and
two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.
Junior Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) ended Beloit's
shutout bid in the seventh when he doubled, advanced to third on a
wild pitch and scored on a groundout from junior Brad Marshall
(Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran).
Lang was 2-for-3 on the day for WLC and senior Jake Thorsteins
(Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) also finished a strong
day at the plate by going 2-for-2. Braaten took the loss as he
allowed five earned runs in 3.2 innings, with three strikeouts and
three walks.
The Buccaneers' offense, which scored 11 runs on 11 hits, was
paced by Jordan Jaenicke and Rick Chernick who both went 3-for-4
with a pair of RBIs. Mike Kovach threw 6.0 shutout innings for
Beloit (6-4), surrendering six hits with three strikeouts and no
walks.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-7) hosts North Park University on Monday,
March 29 in a single nine-inning non-conference game. First pitch
of the Warriors' home opener is slated for 3 p.m. at Neumann Family
Field.
