MILWAUKEE - Carroll University scored four runs
in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie score and defeat
Wisconsin Lutheran College 10-6 on Wednesday in a non-conference
game at Neumann Family Field.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the Warriors
after only two innings of action. CU collected seven hits over
those two frames off of junior starter Austin Backhaus
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport).
Wisconsin Lutheran cut its deficit to run in the third by
scoring three runs on five hits. Senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) started with an RBI single and junior Matt
Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) followed with a two-run
single.
The Warriors grabbed a 6-4 lead in the fourth on back-to-back
RBI doubles from freshmen Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East) and
Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion), and a run-scoring groundout by
Edlhuber that plated Schoen.
After both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, Carroll
closed within a run in the sixth on a Lee Gough RBI single. CU
followed with another run in the seventh on a homerun from Tyler
Fitzsimmons that tied the game at 6-6.
Following an eighth inning which registered zeros for both teams
for just the second time in the contest, the Pioneers broke the tie
by rallying for four runs on six hits. The Warriors were retired in
order in the bottom of the ninth as they were handed their second
straight loss on a ninth-inning rally from the opposition.
Braaten finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for
WLC. Schoen and junior Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) each added two hits and an RBI. Schoen also scored a
run.
Lang suffered the loss in relief of Backhaus after pitching 6.1
innings. Four of Lang's six runs allowed came in the final frame.
Three Warriors hurlers combined for no walks in the game.
Eight different players tallied at least two hits in the contest
for the Pioneers (3-6), who finished with 20 hits in the game. A
trio of players added three RBIs. Steve Belknap threw the final two
scoreless innings for CU to earn the victory in relief.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-9) continues its four-game homestand on
Saturday by hosting the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders in
its Northern Athletics Conference-opening doubleheader. Game one is
