VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team fell to the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings by a score of 4-0 Monday afternoon in its 2010 season opener in the first game of the RussMatt Dodgertown Invitational at historic Holman Stadium.

Bethany Lutheran, the preseason pick to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, scored single runs in both the first and third innings to take a slim 2-0 advantage over Wisconsin Lutheran. The Warriors threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs before stranding all three runners as the frame ended. BLC tallied its final two runs of the contest in the sixth for the final 4-0 margin.

The Warriors were paced at the plate by junior Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) who went 2-for-3. Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan), Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) and Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) each recorded a hit for WLC.

Kyle Edlhuber's (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) NAC-record 33-game hitting streak came to an end after he was hitless in four plate appearances on the day.

Junior Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) went the distance for the Warriors on the mound, tossing seven innings, while allowing four runs and striking out three.

Ben Smith went 3-for-4 and scored three runs to lead the Vikings (4-1) at the plate. Cody Hallahan pitched six scoreless innings and fanned five to earn the victory on the hill.
