VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team fell to the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings
by a score of 4-0 Monday afternoon in its 2010 season opener in the
first game of the RussMatt Dodgertown Invitational at historic
Holman Stadium.
Bethany Lutheran, the preseason pick to win the Upper Midwest
Athletic Conference, scored single runs in both the first and third
innings to take a slim 2-0 advantage over Wisconsin Lutheran. The
Warriors threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs
before stranding all three runners as the frame ended. BLC tallied
its final two runs of the contest in the sixth for the final 4-0
margin.
The Warriors were paced at the plate by junior Justin Barkhurst
(Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) who went 2-for-3. Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan), Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple
Christian) and Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) each recorded
a hit for WLC.
Kyle Edlhuber's (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) NAC-record
33-game hitting streak came to an end after he was hitless in four
plate appearances on the day.
Junior Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) went
the distance for the Warriors on the mound, tossing seven innings,
while allowing four runs and striking out three.
Ben Smith went 3-for-4 and scored three runs to lead the Vikings
(4-1) at the plate. Cody Hallahan pitched six scoreless innings and
fanned five to earn the victory on the hill.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) concludes its first day of competition
in Florida with game two of its doubleheader against Bethany
Lutheran beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Monday.
