VERO BEACH, Fla. - Bethany Lutheran College
scored 12 of its 15 runs over two innings to defeat Wisconsin
Lutheran College 15-2 Monday in its second game of the RussMatt
Dodgertown Invitational at Holman Stadium.
The Vikings (5-1) took advantage of two early miscues by the
Warriors to score three runs in the first inning. WLC's first run
of the season crossed the plate in the top of the third when junior
Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) brought home
senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory), who led
off the inning with a triple, on a RBI groundout.
Bethany Lutheran broke the game open in the bottom of the third
when it scored seven runs on six hits to extend to a 10-1 lead. The
Warriors tallied their final run of the day in the fourth as John
Lynch (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) scored on a Barkhurst sacrifice
fly.
BLC added its final five runs of the game in its half of the
fifth on four hits. Nick Johnson led the Vikings in game two by
going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Junior Brad Marshall (Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) went
2-for-3 for the Warriors, who also had six others record one hit in
the game. Barkhurst added both of WLC's RBIs. Freshman Sam Braaten
(Appleton, Wis./East) was handed the loss (0-1) in his first
collegiate start, surrendering seven runs, four earned, on four
hits in two innings of work.
Darin Hendley pitched four innings, giving up seven hits and two
earned runs to pick up the win for the Vikings.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) will next take on Bridgewater State
(2-2) on Tuesday in a doubleheader slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. at
the RussMatt Dodgertown Invitational.
