LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
baseball team kept pace with Rockford College in what looked like
to be a slugfest as it led 8-6 heading into the bottom of the
third, but it was the host Regents who took control and steamrolled
to a 24-8 victory in game one of a NAC doubleheader at Road Ranger
Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors and Regents exchanged blows in the first three
innings of the game. Rockford went ahead 3-1 after the first
inning. WLC scored three runs in the top half of the second and the
Regents answered with three of their own in the bottom half.
Wisconsin Lutheran then scored four runs on six hits in the
third. Senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
had a two-out, two-RBI single which gave the Warriors an 8-6 lead,
but they missed a chance to extend it by stranding the bases
loaded.
It looked as if the Warriors would escape the bottom of the
third without any damage done as RC had two outs with a runner at
first. Six hits, two home runs and two errors later, the Regents
had scored eight runs and grabbed a 14-8 lead.
The WLC offense only mustered one hit after the third, a double
by freshman Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) in the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, Rockford erupted for 10 runs on eight hits in the bottom
of the fifth to put the game away.
Junior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) had three
hits and an RBI for the Warriors. Edlhuber was 2-for-4 with two
RBIs and senior Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland
Lutheran) was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Schoen added two
hits with an RBI and a run.
Wisconsin Lutheran starter Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport,
Wis./Campbellsport) received the loss (1-3) as nine earned runs
were given up in 2.2 innings pitched.
Rockford pitcher Ben Korth stopped the bleeding for the Regents
as he pitched 3.1 innings in relief and gave up just one hit to
earn the win for Rockford.
Five hitters for Rockford had three or more hits. TJ Stanfield
was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Eric Nicholson
knocked in four runs and Curt Daughenbaugh was also 4-for-5.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-12, 3-2 NAC) will take on the Regents in
game two of their Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at 4
p.m. Saturday at Road Ranger Stadium.
