MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College finished
with nine hits, but left 12 runners on base in a 6-2 loss to
Benedictine University on Sunday in the first game of a Northern
Athletics Conference doubleheader at Neumann Family Field.
After a scoreless first inning from both clubs, Benedictine,
which scored all six of its runs over two innings, plated three
runs on four straight hits to take the early second-inning lead.
The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the second when senior
Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) singled
home junior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian), who led
off the inning with a double.
WLC and BU followed with four more consecutive scoreless frames
before the visiting Eagles scored their final three runs of the
game in the seventh on three hits for the 6-1 lead. All three of
BU's runs that crossed the plate were unearned. The Warriors plated
their final tally in the bottom of the inning when sophomore David
Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark), who began the inning with a walk,
later reached home on a balk.
Neither team could cross a run home over the final two innings
as the final scored stood 6-2. The Warriors stranded two runners on
base in four out of the nine innings.
Thorsteins went 3-for-4 for WLC at the plate with an RBI.
Ferrell and senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) each went 2-for-4. Junior Matt Lang (East Troy,
Wis./East Troy) was dealt the loss (0-4) despite pitching 7.0 solid
innings. He allowed six runs, three earned, while striking out
three and walking three.
