MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors
baseball team dropped the second game of its Northern Athletics
Conference doubleheader against Benedictine University 11-1 in a
run-rule shortened seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Neumann
Family Field.
Benedictine plated a single run in its half of the first when
Jimmy Janchenko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. BU
continued to add to its tally in the second inning when it scored
seven runs on five hits for an 8-0 lead over WLC.
Following a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Eagles plated
another run in the fifth before the Warriors got on the scoreboard
in their half of the inning on a RBI groundout from junior Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) that plated Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan). Pollesch reached base on a single
earlier in the frame.
The Eagles, who left 15 runners on base, scored their final two
runs in the seventh and the game was called after seven complete
due to run rule after WLC was held in the last half inning.
Five different Warriors tallied a hit in the game. Barkhurst was
credited with the team's lone RBI and Pollesch scored a run.
Freshman Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East) threw 4.0 innings and
was handed the loss (1-3) after he gave up six earned runs on nine
hits. WLC combined to walk 13 Benedictine batters.
Uli Ortiz and Kevin Hendricks each went 3-for-4 with two runs
scored for the Eagles (9-11, 4-2 NAC). Dan Zust also went 3-for-3
with two runs batted in. Phil Palmisano pitched 6.0 innings,
allowing one run on five hits for his second win of the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-15, 3-5 NAC) returns to non-conference
action on Tuesday, April 13 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against
North Central University in Minneapolis, Minn.
