RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Concordia Chicago scored
five runs in the last two innings to complete a comeback sweep
against Wisconsin Lutheran College 9-6 in game two of a NAC
doubleheader at Cougar Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars scored two runs on two hits in the first inning
against Warriors freshman starter Sam Braaten (Appleton,
Wis./East). Braaten settled down and threw three straight shutout
innings, allowing just one hit during that span.
An RBI double by junior Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) in the fifth inning that scored junior Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan) cut the deficit to one. Senior Kyle
Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) tied the game at 2-2
by knocking home Barkhurst with a sharp single to center
field.
Concordia Chicago then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth
innings to take a 4-2 lead.
The Warriors capitalized on two Cougars errors and used some
timely hitting to plate four runs on three hits and take a 6-4 lead
into the top of the seventh. Freshman Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion), Edlhuber, and Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) all contributed with RBI singles.
CUC quickly responded with two runs of its own in the bottom
half of the seventh inning to tie the game against senior reliever
John Lynch (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia).
After Wisconsin Lutheran went down in order in the eighth, Zach
Tropp drove in the go-ahead run from second base for Concordia in
the bottom half of the inning. Two more hits brought in two more
runs as CUC took a 9-6 lead heading into the ninth inning.
WLC had two runners on base in the ninth, but closer Tim Milroy
shut the door to earn the save (3) and secure the victory.
Edlhuber led the Warriors' offense with three hits, two RBIs and
a walk. Four other players each had a hit for WLC.
Braaten pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four runs, walking two
and striking out two in a solid outing for the Warriors. Lynch
took the loss (2-2) in relief, throwing 2.0 innings, giving up five
runs, fanning two and walking none.

and two runs scored. Brandon Isaac also had two hits with two RBIs
and two runs. Garett Balind earned the win (1-0) for CUC as he
