MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team had 15 hits but left 14 runners on base as it dropped
game one of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader to Aurora
University 12-5 on Sunday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
The Spartans scored three runs in the second inning with two
outs against senior starter Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake, Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) to take a quick 3-0 lead. Thorsteins held
Aurora to one run over the next three innings until three hits and
a few defensive miscues led to three more runs for the Spartans in
the sixth inning.
Wisconsin Lutheran left the bases loaded, but managed to score
two runs of its own in the bottom half of the sixth when a pair of
RBI singles from senior Shawn Glasel (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley
Lutheran) and freshman Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) made it
7-2.
The Warriors put together another rally in the eighth inning,
scoring two runs with RBIs from Thorsteins and freshman Doug Martin
(West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran). Again, an opportunity to
cut deeper into Aurora's lead was missed as the bases were left
loaded.
The Spartans pulled away in the ninth, rallying for four runs
against senior reliever John Lynch (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia).
Fifteen hits by Wisconsin Lutheran was its third highest total
of the season. Glasel led the offense with three hits and two RBIs.
Senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory) was
3-for-5 and Thorsteins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored.
Thorsteins gave a gutsy performance for the Warriors, throwing
6.0 innings and surrendering eight runs. Lynch was solid in relief,
pitching the final 3.0 innings and giving up one earned run with a
strikeout and no walks.
Four hits by Bobby Wilson led Aurora (16-9, 8-3 NAC). Kirk
Williamson had three hits and four RBIs. Greg Fox earned the win
for the Spartans as he threw 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on
eight hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-18, 3-8 NAC) will meet Aurora in the
second game of a NAC doubleheader on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Neumann
Family Field.
