MILWAUKEE - Junior Matt Lang (East Troy,
Wis./East Troy) threw an impressive complete-game two-hit shutout
as the WLC Warriors took game one of a Northern Athletics
Conference doubleheader over Edgewood College by a score of 2-0
Tuesday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
Lang was unsteady early, walking four in the first two innings,
but the Eagles could not capitalize as they stranded five men on
base. Lang settled down and silenced Edgewood's offense the rest of
the way. The no-hit bid was lost when Steven Binder singled in the
sixth inning. After allowing a single with one out in the ninth
inning, Lang escaped further trouble to earn his first win (1-5) of
the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran's offense got off to a slow start as well,
going hitless until junior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple
Christian) singled in the fourth inning. The Warriors got on the
board in the sixth when freshman Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East)
singled home junior Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) for a 1-0 lead.
A big insurance run was added in the eighth when Barkhurst led
off the inning with a single. Ferrell bunted Barkhurst over to
second and he later scored on a single from senior Jake Thorsteins
(Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran). Small ball was the
theme for Wisconsin Lutheran as they had a season-high five
sacrifice bunts in the game.
Six different Warriors recorded hits to account for their six in
the game. Barkhurst scored both runs, while Ferrell and Braaten
tallied the RBIs. Lang struck out four and walked six while picking
up his first victory of the season.
Tony Ales took the loss for Edgewood (19-12, 10-5 NAC), giving
up a run on three hits through six innings. He also struck out one
and walked five. Steven Binder and Mike Selvaggi were credited with
EC's two hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-20, 4-9 NAC) hosts Edgewood in the second
game of its NAC doubleheader on Tuesday at Neumann Family
Field.
