MILWAUKEE - Sophomore David Frelich's (Maribel,
Wis./Denmark) one-out RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth
inning lifted Wisconsin Lutheran College to an 11-10 win over the
Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders on Saturday in the first
game of the Warriors' conference-opening doubleheader at Neumann
Family Field.
Wisconsin Lutheran found itself in an early hole as MSOE scored
two runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 lead. The
Warriors closed to within a run in the third when they plated three
on RBIs from juniors Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) and Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy). Barkhurst also
scored in the frame when freshman Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East)
reached on an error.
Following a scoreless fourth frame by both teams, the only one
of the game, MSOE and WLC each scored a run during its respective
half innings. The Raiders carried a 5-4 advantage into the
sixth.
MSOE added a single run in the sixth for a two-run lead before
WLC came back to tie the game in its half of the inning on RBI
singles from Barkhurst and senior Kyle Edlhuber (Mukwonago,
Wis./Luther Preparatory).
The Raiders went ahead by three runs, 9-6, in the seventh on
three hits and an error. WLC followed with three hits and took
advantage of three errors to plate four runs and take a slim 10-9
lead into the eighth inning.
The Raiders tied the score at 10 apiece in the eighth after
scoring an unearned run. WLC was held scoreless in its half of the
inning despite getting a pair of hits.
Despite a leadoff double from MSOE in the ninth, the Warriors
escaped without allowing a run by turning an inning-ending 6-3-5
double play.
Freshman Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran),
who entered the game in the fifth at first base, led off the
ninth with a double and advanced to third on an Ethan Geis (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) groundout. Frelich followed with a
sacrifice flyout to left field that scored Martin for the
game-winning run.
Barkhurst and freshman Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) each
went 3-for-5 for the Warriors (2-9, 1-0 NAC), who finished with 16
hits in the game. Barkhurst also added two RBIs. Martin was 2-for-2
with two runs scored and an RBI.
Senior John Lynch (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) pitched the final
2.0 innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. Junior
Austin Backhaus (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) tossed the
first 6.2 innings for the no-decision.
MSOE (2-12, 0-1 NAC) had five different players register two
hits each. Sullivan Dee was dealt his first loss of the season as
he allowed five runs, three earned, in 2.2 innings of relief
work.
Wisconsin Lutheran will search for the sweep of MSOE when the
two teams meet again Saturday in game two of their doubleheader at
Neumann Family Field.
