MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College erupted
to score 18 runs over its final four innings to take game two of
its Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader by a score 23-13 and
complete the sweep of Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday
afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
Wisconsin Lutheran trailed again early to MSOE, 3-0, after two
innings of action. The hosts tied the contest at 3-3 in the third
when Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and Tyler
Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) drove in runs for WLC.
MSOE combined for nine runs over the next two innings to surge
out to a 12-5 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The
Warriors pounded out nine runs on nine hits, receiving RBIs from
Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan), Barkhurst, Kyle Edlhuber
(Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory), Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian), Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East), Brad
Marshall (Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Doug Martin (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), to go in front 14-12 after
five innings.
The scoring pace slowed down as each team added a run to its
tally in the sixth before relievers Edlhuber and Ferrell held MSOE
scoreless in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively.
WLC exploded again in the eighth by plating eight runs on six
hits to end the game because of the 10-run rule. Edlhuber's
bases-clearing three-run double with two outs in the inning ended
the game for the Warriors.
Braaten belted a game-high four of the Warriors' 24 hits in the
game, while Barkhurst, Schoen, Ferrell and Martin each recorded
three hits. Edlhuber and Barkhurst drove in six and five runs,
respectively. Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
threw an inning in relief to pickup the victory. Ferrell pitched a
scoreless top of the eighth to earn his first save.
Emery Hull, Michael Brunette and Justin Quinn each had three
hits for the Raiders (2-13, 0-2 NAC). Christopher Luckey drove in
four runs. Ben Falls allowed 14 runs, five of which were earned, in
4.2 innings to fall to 1-2 on the year.
