SCHAUMBERG, Ill. - Freshman Sam Braaten
(Appleton, Wis./East) won his first collegiate game as he went the
distance against Dominican University, guiding Wisconsin Lutheran
to a 7-3 victory in game two of a Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader at Alexian Field.
The Warriors got on the board first in the third inning when two
errors by Dominican helped score junior Brad Marshall (Cudahy,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), who singled to lead off the inning. WLC
tacked on another run in the fourth inning when junior Josh Ferrell
(Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) doubled and knocked in senior Kyle
Edlhuber (Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory).
WLC's offense finally broke open in the sixth inning when it
opened up the frame with six straight hits and scored four runs to
grab a 6-0 lead. Edlhuber, Ferrell, Braaten, and Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan) each had RBIs in the inning.
Dominican would respond in the bottom half of the sixth inning
with three runs of its own. A hit-by-pitch, single, error and a
wild pitch accounted for the Stars' first two runs. Then a solo
homerun by Lenny Cunzalo brought Dominican within three.
Some small ball by the Warriors added an insurance run in the
eighth. Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran)
singled and was pinch ran for by junior Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) who proceeded to steal second and advanced
to third on an overthrow. Marshall successfully laid down a bunt
for the squeeze play which scored Geis to spot the Warriors a 7-3
lead.
After Dominican scored all three of its runs in the sixth
inning, it went down in order the final three innings. Braaten
pitched all nine innings, giving up just six hits, while fanning
one with no walks.
Ferrell paced the Warriors offense by going 4-for-5 with three
doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Marshall also went 3-for-4 with
an RBI and a run scored. Thorsteins added two hits and Edlhuber
scored twice.
Cunzalo had three of the six hits for the Stars. Zack Roszak was
credited the loss as he allowed nine hits, five earned runs, one
walk and struck out three.
