MILWAUKEE - In what was a roller coaster of a
game at Neumann Family Field on Saturday, the Marian University
Sabres prevailed in a slugfest by pulling out a 23-20 victory over
the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors in game two of a Northern Athletics
Conference doubleheader.
The Warriors trailed 12-8 before scoring nine runs in the bottom
of the seventh to go ahead by five. The Sabres responded with seven
runs of their own in the top half of the eighth to take the lead by
two, 19-17.
Run-scoring singles from junior Justin Barkhurst (Crete,
Ill./Illinois Lutheran), senior Jake Thorsteins (Round Lake Beach,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) and junior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian) spotted WLC a one-run lead, 20-19, as it
went to the ninth. Three walks and a two-out, two-RBI double by
Marian's Ryan Dalton helped the Sabres rally for four runs in the
ninth and a three-run lead. After scoring twelve combined runs in
the previous two innings, another rally in the bottom of the ninth
was not in the cards as Wisconsin Lutheran had to settle for the
split.
Junior Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran), who
went a combined 10-for-11 on the day, led WLC's offense again with
a 5-for-6 performance. He had two doubles, three RBIs and three
runs scored. Thorsteins, along with fellow senior Kyle Edlhuber
(Mukwonago, Wis./Luther Preparatory), had three hits and three RBIs
apiece in the last home game of their careers. Similar to the first
game, seven players had two or more hits for the forest green and
white.
Ferrell was handed the loss (1-1), surrendering four earned runs
over the final 1.2 innings. Thorsteins started the game, giving up
eight earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Marian (11-23, 7-11 NAC) also had seven players with two or more
hits. Josh Klismith and Anthony Porcaro drove in five and four
runs, respectively for MU. Dustin Andrus earned the win, pitching
the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run for the win
(2-3).
The Warriors (9-24, 5-13 NAC) continue conference action on
Sunday by traveling to West Bend, Wis., for a 1 p.m. NAC
doubleheader versus rival Concordia University Wisconsin.
