CLAREMONT, Calif. - California Institute of
Technology shot 50 percent from three-point range and 65 percent
from the floor in the second half en route to defeating Wisconsin
Lutheran College 73-58 on Monday in its final game of the
CMS-Caltech Classic at the Ted Ducey Gymnasium.
Five of Caltech's first six made field goals were from beyond
the arc as it led 19-11 with 12:51 left in the first half. The
Warriors began to slowly chip away at their deficit and took what
would be their only lead of the game, 27-26, at the 3:35 mark of
the half. The Beavers scored the final three points for a 29-27
halftime advantage.
The Warriors shot 37.5 percent (9-for-24) in the first half,
compared to a close 35.7 percent (10-for-28) for Caltech. Junior
Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) scored 10 points in the
first half to pace WLC. Mike Edwards topped all scorers with 11
first-half points for the Beavers.
Caltech never let WLC get any closer than four points through
the first four-plus minutes of the second half. The Beavers shot
65.2 percent (15-for-23) in the half and built their first
double-digit lead of the game, 43-32, with 13:52 remaining. CTI
later led by a game-high 17 points three different times before
winning the contest 73-58.
WLC went 11-for-36 from the field in the second period for 30.6
percent, including just 2-for-12 from beyond the arc. Junior Alex
Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) poured in 10 points to
lead the Warriors in the final frame.
For the game, Murphy finished with 18 points, while Merbach
posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
Senior Darnell Williams (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) also
added nine boards for the Warriors, who out-rebounded Caltech,
43-30. WLC finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from
the floor and tied a season-high with 23 turnovers.
Edwards went 10-for-18 from the floor and made six
three-pointers to lead all scorers with 26 points for Caltech
(4-7). Todd Cramer followed with 19 points and Ryan Elmquist added
14. For the game, the Beavers shot 49 percent (25-for-51) from the
field.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-9, 1-2 NAC), which has completed its
non-conference schedule, returns home to the Recreation Complex on
Saturday afternoon hosting Benedictine University (7-4, 2-2 NAC) at
4:15 p.m.
