MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team couldn't quite overcome its 16-point halftime
deficit on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Benedictine
University Eagles 84-69 at the Recreation Complex.
A three-pointer from sophomore Tim Demuth (Franksville,
Wis./Racine Lutheran) gave Wisconsin Lutheran an 11-8 lead, its
largest of the game, five minutes into the contest, but the Eagles
used a 16-2 run to hold the lead for the rest of the game.
Benedictine shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) and drained six
three-pointers to take a 44-28 lead into the locker room at
halftime. Terry Licht led BU with 16 points off the bench in the
half. WLC shot 36.7 percent (11-for-30) in the half.
The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of
the second half. A trey from sophomore DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa,
Wis./East) brought the Warriors within seven points, 54-47, at the
13:13 mark, but that was as close as they would get. Benedictine
was able to keep WLC at bay by shooting 66.7 percent (16-for-24) in
the second half, compared to 40.6 percent (13-for-32) for the
Warriors. The visitors from Lisle, Ill., out-rebounded Wisconsin
Lutheran, 40-28.
Junior Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Cupertino led the Warriors with 17 points each. Merbach's game-high
10 rebounds gave him his third double-double of the season. Demuth
and junior Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) added 13 points
apiece. Demuth also had six of the Warriors' 12 steals.
Licht led the Eagles (8-5, 3-2 NAC), who had six players reach
double figures, with 21 points. Cameron Snelling pulled down a
game-high 10 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Nate Green also
had 12 points and 10 assists.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-10, 1-3 NAC) travels to Madison, Wis., on
Wednesday for another NAC contest. The Warriors and Edgewood
College Eagles (8-5, 4-1 NAC) square off in a 7 p.m. tip off at the
Todd Wehr Edgedome.
