MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team concluded its 2011 season with a 3-1 win over
Alverno College Wednesday in a Northern Athletics Conference match
at Alverno Athletic Field.
Sophomore Niki DiSalvo (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) put the
Warriors on top in the opening half as she found the back of the
net at the 33:40 mark for the 1-0 WLC lead. Sophomore Maggie Smith
(Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) was credited with an assist on the game's
opening goal.
The Inferno (6-14, 2-10 NAC) out-shot Wisconsin Lutheran 15-11
in the opening 45 minutes, but Warriors freshman goalkeeper Sarah
Luebke (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) kept Alverno off the
scoreboard by making four first-half saves.
Alverno tied up the contest at 1-1 just 3:48 into the second
half when Nova Moniriarani scored off a penalty kick to even the
score at one apiece.
The Warriors would answer, however, as Smith notched her
team-leading seventh goal of the season, scoring with 19:50
remaining in the match, giving the forest green and white a 2-1
advantage.
Freshman Sarah Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
then netted her first career collegiate goal 10 minutes and 37
seconds later, scoring off of a penalty kick for the Warriors
two-goal lead.
Luebke made two more second-half saves, totaling six for the
contest. Inferno goalie Samantha Robinson made nine saves.
The Warriors were narrowly out-shot in the contest 21-20 as
DiSalvo finished with a team-high five shots in the victory. Smith
chipped in with four shots, while sophomore Cari Westover (Muskego,
Wis./Muskego) and freshmen Emily Seidler (St. Joseph,
Mich./Michigan Lutheran) and Heather Nielsen (Wildwood,
Fla./Villages) each tallied three for WLC. Bryanna Gayle led
Alverno with 11 shots.
Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its season with a 3-15 overall
record, including a 3-9 mark in NAC play.
