MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team captured its second straight Lutheran Bowl victory
with a 35-28 win over Northern Athletics Conference rival Concordia
University Wisconsin Saturday at Raabe Stadium.
After Concordia (3-5, 3-2 NAC) drove down the field and missed a
field goal on its opening drive of the contest, WLC marched down
the field, going 80 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead on a
one-yard quarterback sneak from Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren
Township).
The Warriors defense then forced a fumble on their next drive
when Tim Wermeling (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) forced the ball
out of the opposing quarterback's hands and sophomore linebacker
Eric Zeitler (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was there to
recover.
The Warriors could not capitalize off of that turnover but their
defense gave them another chance, this time when Jordan Rabe
(Oshkosh, Wis./West) recorded an interception late in the first
quarter. The offense fully took advantage of that turnover, going
six plays and 31 yards capped off by a Donavin Tucker (Brookfield,
Wis./East) eight-yard touchdown run to give WLC a 14-0
advantage.
The Falcons answered scoring just 2:04 later and to make the
score 14-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. After a
Tucker kickoff return brought the ball to the CUW 39-yard line, the
Warriors used five plays to punch in another touchdown, this time
Shaw finding senior running back Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) for a 16-yard touchdown.
Concordia had a chance to tighten things up a bit before half,
but freshman Travis Turnquist (Madison, Wis./East) blocked a CUW
field-goal attempt on the last play of the half to keep the score
at 21-7 heading into the break.
After a WLC interception, the Falcons brought things to within
seven when Austin Damaschke found Garrett Wenzelburger for his
first of three touchdowns on the day, making the score 21-14 just
2:24 into the second half.
Wisconsin Lutheran again responded, this time with wide receiver
Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) making a diving catch in the
end zone and giving the Warriors another 14-point advantage with
8:18 to go in the third quarter. That play was Shaw's second
passing score of the contest.
Shaw then had another sneak mid-way through the fourth quarter,
giving the forest green and white a 21-point lead with 7:32 left in
the game.
Concordia would not go away, however, as it scored twice in the
final 1:09, with both scores being Damaschke to Wenzelburger
touchdown passes. Wisconsin Lutheran would recover the final onside
kick with 14 seconds remaining to walk away with the win and Luther
Cup.
Shaw led the Warriors offensively as he totaled four touchdowns,
two rushing and two passing. Muldrow finished with 104 yards
rushing on 17 carries, while also adding 33 yards receiving. Tight
end Kinte Collins (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) caught a team-high four
passes for a game-high 94 yards.
Defensively the Warriors were sound all game long, forcing four
turnovers in the contest. In addition to his fumble recovery,
Zeitler also recorded an interception, while finishing with 10
tackles. For his efforts, Zeitler was named Player of the Game as a
scholarship was given to Wisconsin Lutheran in his name.
Richard Belsky (Cedarburg, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) tied Zeitler
with a team-high 10 tackles. Mitch Ronacher (Safety Harbor,
Fla./Countryside) recorded an interception while Wermeling notched
two sacks.
Justin Rogers made eight tackles, had an interception and
recovered fumble in the loss for CUW as he was honored as the
Falcons Player of the Game, receiving a scholarship in his name for
Concordia Wisconsin for his efforts.
The Warriors (4-4, 3-2 NAC) will return to action next Saturday
as they host Aurora University (3-5, 2-3 NAC) in their home finale.
The game, which will be Senior and Parents Day, is set to begin at
1 p.m. at Raabe Stadium.
