MILWAUKEE - The fourth-seeded Wisconsin
Lutheran College volleyball team fell in a closely-contested five
set match to Maranatha Baptist Bible College Tuesday night in a
Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match at the
Recreation Complex.
The fifth-seeded Crusaders (20-6, 7-5 NAC) narrowly won the
opening set 25-23 before WLC responded with a dominating 25-16
second set performance. Maranatha answered with a 25-20 third set
win before the Warriors forced a deciding fifth set, cruising to a
25-12 fourth set victory.
In the fifth and final set, Maranatha jumped out to an early
lead and held a 10-5 advantage before the Warriors notched a key
point to get the serve back in their control. Sophomore Mariah
Bukiewicz (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) then served four straight
points to bring the score even at 10-10.
The visiting Crusaders responded, however, as they notched the
next four points to take a 14-10 lead and force match point.
Senior Jenna Neuberger (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
hammered down a spike to make things 14-11 and then served the next
point to bring the Warriors within two points. The Crusaders would
take that point on a Torey DeLozier kill, giving Maranatha the 3-2
win.
Senior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was
impressive all night in her final match for the Warriors, tallying
21 kills and finishing with an impressive .395 attack percentage.
Neuberger and sophomore Kelli Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) each recorded 11 kills for the forest green and white..
As a team, the Warriors hit .237 for the match, while holding the
Crusaders to a .147 attack percentage.
Bukiewicz assisted on several of those kills as she finished
with a match-high 27 assists, while freshman Beth Baxter
(Germantown, Wis./Germantown) added 18.
Defensively, the Warriors had three players finish with
double-digit digs, led by Kayla Ridgeman's (Jefferson,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) 26. Sophomore Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) chipped in with 20 digs, while Neuberger
completed her double-double, compiling 19 in the match.
DeLozier was the top player for Maranatha as she notched a
double-double with 28 kills and 25 digs. Pam Borchardt and Emily
Thompson finished with 20 and 19 assists, respectively, for the
visiting Crusaders.
The Warriors conclude their season with a 19-13 overall record
including an 8-4 NAC mark. Tonight's game was the first time the
Warriors had ever hosted a NAC Tournament match, as the
fourth-place regular season finish was the highest since joining
the league in 2006.
