MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College and
Edgewood College exchanged leads 11 times, but the visiting Eagles
edged the Warriors 72-65 in their final home game of the regular
season on Saturday at the Recreation Complex.
Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) put the
Warriors on the board first with a jumper just :28 seconds into the
game. The Eagles responded quickly with a three-pointer, but Tim
Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) answered right back with
a three-pointer of his own to gain an advantage for the Warriors.
Edgewood gained the lead back, 24-22, at the 9:16 mark and held it
for the remainder of the half. After EC led by as many as 10 points
with just over two minutes to play, the Warriors went into halftime
trailing, 35-29.
Demuth and Merbach paced the first-half scoring for the Warriors
by adding nine and eight points, respectively. Wisconsin Lutheran
shot 41.4 percent (12-for-29) in the first half. Edgewood
out-rebounded WLC 19-10 in the half and shot a blazing 60 percent
(15-for-25) from the field. Kent Faurote and Ben Wisniewski scored
13 and 12 points apiece for the Eagles in the period.
Baskets from Jeremy Murphy (Chicago, Ill./Clemente), Demuth, DJ
Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and Darnell Williams
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) in the second half earned the
Warriors a 42-41 lead at the 15:16 mark. The Eagles regained the
lead again, 53-52, with 7:17 left in the half and held onto it for
the remainder of the game. EC shot 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from
the field in the second half. Wisconsin Lutheran finished the half
shooting an improved 46.4 percent (13-for-28).
The Warriors scoring attack was led by a pair of players who
reached double figures. Merbach led the way with 18 points, while
Demuth followed closely with 15, all on three-pointers. Merbach
also pulled down a team-best five rebounds.
WLC went 25-for-57 (43.9 percent) from the floor for the game
and committed a season-low eight turnovers.
Four players reached double figures for the Eagles (16-7, 12-3
NAC) with Wisniewski leading the way by netting a game-high 23
points. Jeff Barczak added 16 points and nine rebounds off the
bench. The Eagles out-rebounded WLC, 36-22, in the contest.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-18, 3-11 NAC) begins its final week of the
regular season on Tuesday, February 15 when it travels to Lakeland
College (13-10, 8-7 NAC) in Sheboygan, Wis., for a 7 p.m.
tip-off.
