MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
Warriors men's basketball team was defeated by the Rockford College
Regents at the Recreation Complex in a NAC Challenge game on
Saturday by a final score of 77-67.
The Warriors came out shooting well from beyond the arc and led
13-12 with 12:02 remaining in the first half after sophomore
Russell Stutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) connected from
long distance. The Regents responded with a 6-0 run and never
surrendered the lead for the remainder of the contest. Rockford
held a slim 38-34 advantage at halftime.
Sophomore Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) led WLC
scorers at the break with nine points. The Warriors were 13 of 32
from the field (40.4 percent) and 6 of 14 (42.9 percent) from
three-point range. Rockford out-scored the hosts 16 to 8 in the
paint and was 16 of 29 (55.2 percent) from the field. Taylor
Stinson scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half for the
Regents.
The Regents led by a game-high 12 points with 13:00 remaining
in the second half. WLC used a 10-2 run, capped off by a Demuth
three-pointer, to cut its deficit to two points with just under
eight minutes to go. Rockford would hold off the Warriors the rest
of the way.
The second half was owned by RC's Robert Malone, who scored 22
of the Regents' 39 points. No other player had more than four
points in the half for Rockford, which shot 13 for 25 (52
percent). WLC duplicated its first half shooting numbers
(13-for-35).
Wisconsin Lutheran tied its season-high in three pointers made
by nailing 11 of 28 attempts (39.3 percent). Demuth hit six from
beyond the arc and led WLC with 23 points. Junior Alex Merbach
(Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) also scored 19 and grabbed six
rebounds.
Malone dropped 30 for the Regents and had 11 boards. Stinson
finished with 14 and Tory Minnifield contributed with 12
points.
Eighth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran (5-20, 4-12 NAC) will travel to
Mequon, Wis., to challenge the top-seeded Concordia Wisconsin
(22-3, 16-0 NAC) in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament
Quarterfinal on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the R. John
Buuck Field House.
