MILWAUKEE - Nineteenth-year head coach Skip
Noon collected his 250th career coaching victory as four Warriors
reached double figures to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College over
Marian University 80-66 on Wednesday night at the Recreation
Complex.
The Sabres came out shooting hot by opening the game on an 11-2
run over the first five minutes. Over the next three and a half
minutes, the Warriors countered with an 11-2 run of their own to
tie the game at 13-13.WLC took the lead on a three-point play by
sophomore Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran). Marian
once again got hot making six of its next seven shots from the
field, including three from beyond the arc to take a 14-point lead,
33-19, with 5:53 remaining in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran
hung with the Sabres the rest of the half and went into the break
trailing by 10 points, 40-30.
Demuth led WLC with 12 points in the opening half, going 3-for-6
from beyond the arc. The Warriors shot 34.4 percent (11-for-32),
compared to a stifling 60.9 percent (14-for-23) for the Sabres.
Marian also went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc as Jeff Harris led the
way with 16 points. Harris was also 4-for-6 from behind the
three-point line in the half.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out strong in the second half by going
on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 with just 2:32 gone by in
the half. With 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors began
to pull away from the Sabres by building a seven-point lead, 56-49.
Marian closed to within two points, 58-56, at the 7:07 mark, but
that was all the closer it would come. WLC finished the contest
strong to seal its first home victory of the season.
The Warriors heated up in the second half, shooting 48.1 percent
(13-for-27) while going 4-for-9 from three-point range. Marian shot
36.4 percent (8-for-22) in the second half and 48.9 percent
(22-for-45) for the game.
Demuth finished with 21 points to lead the Warriors, while
junior Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 19
points. Freshmen teammates Cody Jackson (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and Zach Jahns (Jackson, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) combined to score 22 of WLC's 28 points off the
bench, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. WLC out-rebounded
Marian, 33-30. The Warriors committed just 14 turnovers and forced
the Sabres into 23 miscues. Wisconsin Lutheran concluded the
contest shooting 40.7 percent (24-for-59).
MU (3-19, 1-13 NAC) was led by a trio of players. Harris tied a
game high with 21 points, Donnahugh Brown added 13 points and Josh
Washington scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-17, 3-10 NAC) remains home for its final
regular season home game on Saturday afternoon. WLC will host
Edgewood College (15-7, 11-3 NAC) in a 4:15 p.m. Senior Day tip off
at the Recreation Complex.
