FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team suffered its first sweep of the season Friday
afternoon after falling to Augustana College (Ill.) 9-2 and 7-0 in
a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Vikings (8-1), who are one spot shy of the cracking the Top
25 according to D3baseball.com, scored six runs in the opening
inning to jump on top of the Warriors. Wisconsin Lutheran kept the
Vikings off the scoreboard for four frames, but it was too much of
a deficit to overcome. AC added a single score in the fourth and
two more in the sixth.
WLC had 11 runners reach base in the game, but only two of which
crossed home plate. The Warriors received RBIs from freshman Taylor
Meyer (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) in the fourth and senior Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) in the seventh. Barkhurst
finished with two of WLC's four hits in the game.
The Warriors struggled to generate offense in the second game.
WLC mustered just two hits off of some solid Vikings pitching.
Augustana, which had 13 hits in the game, scored twice in the
second, once in the third and plated two each in the fifth and
sixth innings. Barkhurst and freshman Josh Tanguay (Mukwonago,
Wis./Mukwonago) collected hits for the Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-4) concludes its spring break week in Fort
Myers on Saturday when it faces SUNY New Paltz in a single,
nine-inning game scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST.
