LISLE, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team split a doubleheader with Benedictine University
(12-10, 5-4 NAC) Sunday afternoon, winning the first game, 4-3,
before dropping the second game, 4-1.
In the opening game, BU scored two runs in the bottom of the
first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles held a
two-run lead until the sixth inning when Garrick Day (Elk Mound,
Wis./Elk Mound) reached on an error that allowed Doug Martin (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) to score the first run for WLC.
The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the inning with a run of
their own to push the lead back to two, 3-1.
After a scoreless seventh inning from both teams, the Warriors
plated three runs to regain the lead. A double by Day scored Cody
Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and a single from Tyler
Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) plated Day and Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian) to put the Warriors up for good.
Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) threw his third-straight
complete game victory. He allowed three runs (two earned), seven
hits and struck out three. Day led the Warriors offense going
2-for-5 with double and drove in two runs. Schoen also had two RBIs
on 1-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams traded
scoreless frames through the first six innings. In the seventh, BU
plated three runs and one more in the eighth to take a 4-0 lead.
The only run the Warriors were able to tally was off a Martin
groundout that scored Schoen in the top of the ninth inning.
Day was handed the tough loss on the mound for Wisconsin
Lutheran. He allowed four runs (one earned) on only four hits while
striking out five. Martin drove in the only run for the
Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran (13-10, 5-3 NAC) returns to action Wednesday,
April 13 when it hosts Finlandia University in a 12 p.m.
