MILWAUKEE - It was a tale of two games for the
Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on Wednesday afternoon as they
split a non-conference doubleheader with the Finlandia University
Lions by scores of 11-7 and 9-3 at Neumann Family Field.
Wisconsin Lutheran stormed out of the gates in game one, scoring
in each of the first five innings and took an 11-0 lead into the
top of the sixth. Finlandia's bats came alive in the final two
frames as it rallied for seven runs on seven hits.
Freshman Alex Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More)
pitched five strong, shutout innings on his way to earning his
first collegiate win. He allowed three hits and struck out four.
The Warriors offense exploded for 17 hits. The first five hitters
in WLC's lineup went a combined 14-for-20. Four Warriors had three
hits each in the game.
In game two, Finlandia used the momentum it gained at the end of
game one and came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead into the fifth
inning. The Warriors got on the board in the fifth when freshman
Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and senior Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) each drove in runs with
RBI singles.
The Lions answered right back in the top of the sixth with three
runs of their own. WLC scored one in the seventh, but it wasn't
enough as Finlandia salvaged the split in game two with a 9-3 win.
After their hit parade in the opener, the Warriors could only
muster six hits versus Finlandia's starting hurler. Nevils finished
with two hits and Barkhurst drove in two runs for WLC. Freshman
Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) scored both Warriors
runs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (14-11, 5-3 NAC) hosts Northern Athletics
Conference-leading Concordia University Chicago (18-4, 8-0 NAC) on
Saturday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Neumann Family Field.
