AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team dropped a pair of Northern Athletic Conference games
to hot-hitting Aurora University by scores of 25-8 and 16-6 on
Sunday afternoon at Solfisburg Park.
A combination of Spartan hitting and shaky defense led Aurora to
score at least two runs in every inning. The hosts scored five runs
on five hits in the first inning and never looked back. In a
shortened, seven-inning game because of the run rule, the Spartans
tallied 25 hits, 11 of which were for extra bases.
The Warriors offense finished strong, scoring six runs over
their final two innings. Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound),
Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and Ethan Geis (Fond
du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) each finished with two RBI for
Wisconsin Lutheran.
In game two, Aurora continued right where it left off in the
opener. After sophomore Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) gave the
Warriors the lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out RBI
single, the Spartans once again jumped on WLC pitching with seven
runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the inning.
Trailing 8-1 in the top of the third, Schoen cut the deficit to
five when he hit a two-run homerun to left-center field. Again,
the Spartans responded with some runs of their own in the bottom
half of the third, using three hits and a couple of breaks to score
five times for a 13-3 advantage. AU finished with 15 hits, 13 of
which were singles.
Geis blasted WLC's second home run of the day, a two-run shot to
deep left-center field in the sixth inning. Senior Justin Barkhurst
(Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) finished 3-for-3 with two runs
scored and an RBI. Schoen added two hits and three RBI.
Wisconsin Lutheran (14-13, 5-5 NAC) returns to action on Tuesday
when it faces NCAA Division I opponent UW-Milwaukee. First pitch is
scheduled for 4 p.m. at Henry Aaron Field.
