MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened
its 2011 NAC schedule with a doubleheader sweep over the Milwaukee
School of Engineering Raiders (3-11, 0-2 NAC) by winning 7-5 and
12-1 Saturday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
In the first game of the afternoon, MSOE scored four runs in the
first inning to take the early lead. Sophomore Tyler Schoen
(Marion, Wis./Marion) drove in the first two runs for the Warriors
in the fifth inning with a single. WLC took the lead in the eighth
after an RBI single from senior Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran), an error that scored Geis, and an RBI
double from senior Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan). The
Warriors were unable to hold onto their 5-4 lead in the bottom of
the inning as MSOE evened, before it eventually went into
extras.
In the tenth, a Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton)
RBI double and a Pollesch RBI triple put the Warriors up by two
runs, 7-5. Senior Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) came into
the game to nail down the extra-inning save for the Warriors.
Freshman Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) started the game
and pitched nine innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits, while
striking out eight to pick up his third win on the season. Geis
lead the offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with a double and an
RBI, while Pollesch collected two RBIs, including a double and
triple on 3-for-5 at the plate.
The second game of the doubleheader was all Warriors as they won
12-1 in seven innings. In the fourth inning, WLC batted around and
plated seven runs on six hits. Schoen, Lang, Geis and Pollesch
drove in runs while Nevils added two more in the fourth. MSOE
plated its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Warriors scored their final five runs of the nightcap in the
seventh inning. Senior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian)
plated three with a double. Schoen picked up another with a triple
and Lang drove in Schoen with a double.
Sophomore Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East) went the distance for
the Warriors picking up his second win to move to 2-0 on the
season. He allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out
four.
Ferrell led the team with three RBIs. Schoen and Lang each went
3-for-4, while driving in two RBIs apiece. Nevils also picked up
two RBIs while collecting two hits in three at-bats.
WLC (10-5, 2-0 NAC) returns to the diamond Sunday afternoon for
another NAC doubleheader against the Dominican University Stars.
The action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Neumann Family
Field.
