VERONA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team split a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader
with the Edgewood College Eagles Monday at Stampfl Field, losing
game one 6-3 before bouncing back to win the second game, 10-7.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning
of the nightcap and never trailed. WLC benefited from three walks,
a hit and an error in the frame. Following Edgewood's first run of
the game in the second, the Warriors strung together three hits and
again benefited from an Eagle miscue to lead 5-1.
Wisconsin Lutheran broke open the game in the fourth with five
runs on five hits. The Warriors received RBIs from Josh Ferrell
(Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian), Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and Ryan Pollesch (Markesan,
Wis./Markesan) in the inning.
The Warriors were held scoreless for the final five innings, but
were able to hold off the Eagles, who scored twice in the third and
sixth, and once more in the seventh.
Ferrell, Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) and Garrick Day (Elk
Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) each went 2-for-4 in the game for the
Warriors, who pounded out 11 hits. Day also earned his third
victory of the year on the mound after throwing a complete game. He
scattered nine hits and allowed seven runs, only four of which were
earned.
Six of the game's 17 runs scored were unearned as both clubs
combined for an uncharacteristic 15 errors.
Wisconsin Lutheran also jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the
opener when Schoen hit a two-run single that scored Justin
Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and Day for the first
inning lead. However, the Eagles plated two runs in both the
second, third and fourth innings to account for their six runs.
The Warriors were held to just one hit over the final six
innings of the game. An RBI single from Matt Lang (East Troy,
Wis./East Troy) in the eighth accounted for WLC's final tally of
the game.
Schoen and Lang each went 2-for-4 to lead the Warriors at the
plate in the opener. Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) pitched the final four and two-thirds innings of
scoreless relief for WLC.
Wisconsin Lutheran (17-14, 8-6 NAC) is scheduled to host
conference-leading Concordia University Chicago (23-7, 12-2 NAC)
Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Neumann Family Field.
