FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team suffered a heartbreaking doubleheader sweep
to the Marian University Sabres (13-14, 10-6 NAC) Saturday
afternoon at Herr-Baker Field. The Warriors fell 5-4 in 15 innings
in game one, before dropping the nightcap 9-2.
Marian mounted an early 2-0 lead in the third inning of the
opener on a two-run single. Wisconsin Lutheran got one of its runs
back in the fourth on an RBI double from Josh Ferrell (Cocoa,
Fla./Temple Christian).
The Warriors scored three times in the sixth inning to jump in
front 4-2 on an RBI single from Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion)
and a two-run double off the bat of Ferrell. The Sabres knotted the
score at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame with two runs on two
hits.
Both teams then traded eight straight scoreless innings that
sent the contest into the 15th still tied at 4-4. The Warriors put
runners at the corners with one out in the top half of the inning,
but could not push the go-ahead run across the plate.
After MU began the inning with a lead-off single, the Sabres
followed with a sacrifice bunt that the Warriors could not execute
cleanly and the game-winning run scored from third base.
Ferrell finished 3-for-6 with three RBI to pace Wisconsin
Lutheran. Schoen, Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) and
Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) also collected two
hits each.
Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Steve Gustafson (West
Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) combined to pitch the entire game
for WLC. Raver started the game and struck out eight in seven
innings. Gustafson came on in relief and allowed just three hits in
seven and one-third innings of work.
The Sabres once again jumped out to a 2-0, first-inning lead and
never looked back in the nightcap. Following scoreless second and
third frames, MU scored in four straight innings for an 8-0
advantage.
The Warriors scored twice in the eighth on RBIs from Ryan
Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) and Ferrell to account for their
only two runs of the game.
Pollesch and Barkhurst each went 2-for-4 with a run scored for
the Warriors in the game.
