MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team overcame a pair of 3-0 deficits on its way to
sweeping the Dominican University Stars 11-7 and 9-4 Tuesday
afternoon at Neumann Family Field. The games were rescheduled from
Sunday, April 3.
The Stars struck first in the opener by scoring three runs on
four hits in the first inning. WLC generated just two hits through
the first five innings as it entered the sixth inning still
trailing 3-0.
The Warriors knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth behind a
two-run single from senior Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois
Lutheran) and an RBI groundout by sophomore Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion). WLC took its first lead of the game, 4-3, in the
seventh on a Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) RBI
single.
Dominican regained the lead during its half of the eighth by
scoring four runs on four hits for a 7-3 advantage.
The see-saw battle went back in favor of the Warriors in a big
way in the bottom of the inning. WLC scored seven times on five
hits, including three doubles for the 11-7 lead. The Stars loaded
the bases in the ninth, but were unable to send any runners across
the plate.
Senior Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) went the distance
for the Warriors on the mound, tossing all 9.0 innings to improve
to 2-1 on the year.
Day went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for WLC.
Barkhurst and senior Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) also added two hits apiece.
WLC found itself in an early deficit again in game two, trailing
4-0 after two innings. After getting on the board in the third on a
Barkhurst RBI fielder's choice, the Warriors erupted for six runs
on six hits in the fourth to grab a 7-4 lead.
Day, who threw a complete-game and surrendered three earned
runs, allowed just five hits after the second inning to hold the
Stars in-check. WLC followed with single tallies in each the sixth
and seventh for the 9-4 final score.
Senior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) went 3-for-3
with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Warriors. Schoen,
senior Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan), and freshmen Ben
Edmundson (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Josh Tanguay
(Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) each collected two hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-5, 4-0 NAC) hosts Beloit College (6-6)
