MILWAUKEE - Unlike their recent trend, the WLC
Warriors baseball team could not overcome early deficits as they
dropped two non-conference games to Beloit College by scores of 3-0
and 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
Freshman pitcher Alex Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas
More) held the Buccaneers scoreless through the first three innings
of game one. Beloit got on the board first with two runs on three
hits in the fourth inning and added another in the seventh.
Wisconsin Lutheran seemed destined for another comeback rally in
the fifth inning as it loaded the bases with no outs. Instead,
Beloit induced a double play and a groundout to escape the inning
unscathed.
WLC managed just four hits in the game as the Buccaneers used a
committee of three pitchers to earn the shutout. Nikolai was
effective on the mound in his third start of the season. He tossed
the complete game, allowing three earned runs and six hits. Senior
Ryan Pollesch (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) led the Warriors
offensively, reaching base three times with two hits and a
walk.
The Warriors offensive struggles carried over to the second game
as they again could only muster four hits against the BC pitching
staff.
Pitching and defense dominated through the first five frames as
both offenses exchanged three hits apiece. The Bucs broke through
in the sixth inning, taking advantage of three walks and an error
to plate five runs on three hits.
Pollesch allowed just three hits through the first five innings
of his start before surrendering four earned runs in the sixth.
Junior reliever Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) came in relief and allowed one hit in 1.2 innings
pitched. Sophomore Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) claimed two
of WLC's four hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-7, 4-0 NAC) will look to continue its
early conference success when it hosts Rockford College (6-9, 2-2
NAC) Saturday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Neumann Family
Field.
